How did this gym start?

From a road trip to the town where Tawnya grew up. Wofford Heights is a rural community in eastern California, far from the cement jungle of Los Angeles. The dirt-rutted roads and beautiful mountain vistas called to the Torgl’s as a home for their retiring years. Yet, Danny was not ready for day hikes and skiing. Instead, they would open a fitness club – their first. Individuals struggling with injuries, chronic diseases, and illnesses would find a place of welcome.

What do the gym owners do for their community?

Tawnya and Danny believe in giving back in a way that encourages fitness for everyone. Since opening, they’ve held two OnPoint Gym Fun Runs, which are obstacle competitions held in the local rodeo arena. Money is on the line for the fastest man, woman, and team. By holding it at a rodeo arena, they generate revenue from seat sales. In the last two years, they’ve raised $15,000 for local charities. Tawnya also sits on the board of two local nonprofit organizations.

These gym owners hold a obstacle race annually to raise money for local charities.

What makes training at OnPoint Gym different?

  • All members must follow a dress code.
  • Each piece of equipment is numbered. The numbers correspond to training programs posted throughout the gym. A member can choose any program and know what to do at every visit.
  • Employees and trainers gently redirect, educate, and coach members throughout out their workouts.

How are personal trainers compensated?

Personal trainers are independent subcontractors and keep 100% of their fees. in exchange, they agree to work at the front desk in four- or six-hour paid shifts. During this time, they clean the gym, help with clients, answer phones, and enter data. Tawnya equates it to the way a commercial real estate office is set up. The design keeps the gym spotless and builds a camaraderie between owners and contractors.

What is in the future for OnPoint Gym?

The Torgls have purchased property to build a 6,000-square-foot facility that will serve as part community center, part fitness hub. The expansive new center will offer rehabilitative services and support services for veterans. It will feature salt rooms for people with COPD. Additionally, there will be chiropractic care, self-defense classes, and tanning. The center will include stretching and acoustic pulse therapies, massage, and a large cardio area. Visitors can enjoy an indoor walking path and a café overlooking the property’s lake.

Their vision seeks to build relationships with national non profit associations to bring essential programs to the community. Each touchstone building upon the concept of a health-first, quality-of-life center.

What advice do you have for personal trainers seeking to start their own gym?

  • Buy quality equipment — it is your largest investment.
  • Take care of the equipment – hire a good maintenance person and use hiqh quality lubricants and parts.
  • Choose software carefully. Ask how the merchant account is handled. Read the fine print. Ask if the software sits on your platform or theirs.
  • Keep money aside for unexpected start-up costs. OnPoint tucked $50,000 away for additional expenses. In their case, the cash funded rent increases and additional employees.
  • Rent more space than you need. OnPoint outgrew its site within eight months, leaving the gym owners scrambling to build their new location earlier than anticipated.

How did OnPoint become a Gym Insight client?

The hard way. Tawnya first contracted with an international gym software company. After charging $6,000 for their “Cadillac” program, the company left OnPoint in start-up mode for most of the year. Meanwhile an even bigger software firm purchased their provider. Limping along, Tawnya soon discovered the reports weren’t running correctly. Customer service did not exist. And. most significantly, she was powerless to stop the continuous withdrawals because the software did not sit on their computer system.

“I did not know to ask how the merchant account is handled, or what control I’ll have over it,” she explained.

After a year, she refused to renew the agreement. Instead of heeding her instructions, the company deducted the fee from her company checking account – without her permission. The fighter in her roared to life. She contacted her banker and an attorney. Once free of the unscrupulous company, she researched the market and found Gym Insight. Our privately held company gives her the freedom to choose her own merchant account. We charge no hidden fees. And we offer a simple subscription model with a money-back satisfaction guarantee.
