Ryan Hetherington always wanted to own a gym since he was a teenager, but up until recently, it didn’t seem likely to happen. He had put that dream on the shelf years earlier. However, fate stepped in, and as the saying goes:

Life Is What Happens to You While You’re Busy Making Other Plans.

Today, just over three months after taking ownership of Full Armor Fitness in Weatherford, Oklahoma (population of about 12,000), he and his wife Lexie run a thriving 6,000-square-foot, 24/7 gym with roughly 510 members, up from about 170 the day they took the keys on April 27, 2026. More incredibly, they do it with zero employees while both working full-time (Ryan as a deputy sheriff; his wife in nursing school).

The growth is impressive. However, the story behind it is even more remarkable.

From Undersized Lineman to Law Enforcement

Ryan’s fitness journey started in high school under the tough guidance of his football coach, Woody Roof. As a lineman weighing in around 220 pounds at the time, Ryan was told he needed to hit 230 if he wanted to start. He trained and ate with discipline… and somehow showed up at a shredded 169 pounds.

His coach was not happy. Ryan still earned the starting job at guard and lined up against players who outweighed him by a hundred pounds or more. That experience taught him what consistency and discipline could produce, in and out of the gym. Lessons that have stuck for life.

“I just loved the gym. I started looking into what it would take to own one when I was around 19 years old, and at that point I thought that was eventually going to be my career. Then life took me in a completely different direction. At the age of 21, I happened to train at the same gym where a lot of the local police officers worked out. A sergeant named Casey Clark told me one day that he thought I should apply to the police department. I had never planned on becoming a police officer, but I took his advice and applied,” Ryan explains.

He became a police officer, then a deputy sheriff. Somewhere along the way, the idea of owning a gym faded. “I fell in love with law enforcement. It became another passion of mine, and I completely put the idea of owning a gym out of my mind.”

As many other gym owners can attest to, dreams have a way of reappearing when you least expect it. The local facility came up for sale at almost the exact moment he had pension money available that could not transfer over to his new job as a sheriff’s deputy. He used it for a down payment.

Ten months later, he owned it. “I thought I had given up on the dream,” Ryan says. “Instead, it came back into my life at exactly the right time.”

More Than a Gym Name

The name Full Armor Fitness is not branding fluff. It comes from one of the darkest seasons of Ryan’s life.

In essentially one day, he lost his relationship, his job, and after shattering his hand, his ability to train. Shortly after the hand healed, he completely tore his pec. Training had always been his outlet. Suddenly it was gone too.

He found himself pacing his house for hours, unsure what to do with his life. He didn’t grow up going to church and didn’t believe in God. He was struggling, and he knew it.

“During that period, I found myself sitting in a church service. At one point, I felt something move through my entire body for a couple of seconds. My immediate thought was that it was God, but almost as quickly as I thought it, I dismissed it. I told myself that couldn’t be what it was because I didn’t even believe in God.”

“I spent the rest of the service questioning what I had experienced. At the end of the service during the altar call, I felt it again, only this time it was overwhelming. It felt like electricity moving from my head to my feet, and it didn’t immediately disappear. In that moment, I felt God tell me that He was there and that everything was going to be okay.”

“My life changed from that point forward,” he says.

That experience became the foundation of the gym. The mission is simple and powerful: “Strength for Those Who Carry Weight.”

“Everyone who walks through our doors is carrying something,” Ryan explains. “It might be responsibility, expectations, loss, regret, past mistakes, or a battle nobody else knows they’re fighting. Strength isn’t just about how much weight you can lift.”

Running a 510-Member Gym with Zero Staff

Full Armor is a straightforward 24/7 strength and general fitness gym. No classes. No personal training packages. Nearly all revenue comes from memberships (about 95%), with a small percentage from day and week passes.

Ryan and his wife handle everything themselves, from cleaning, maintenance, equipment issues, member questions, and improvements, on top of their full-time careers.

The reason this structure works is because of the Gym Insight software. Ryan is open about how critical Gym Insight has been.

“For someone who wants to own a gym without having to physically sit at the gym all day every day, I couldn’t imagine a system fitting that model much better,” he says. “I’m a full-time deputy sheriff while also owning and operating Full Armor. Our gym is essentially completely self-service. Someone can sign up for a membership and get their door access without me physically being at the gym.”

Besides the technology, Ryan says the Gym Insight team has acted beyond a typical software vendor.

“What has impressed me most is that they aren’t just a software company. I can call them and ask for advice about operating a gym, and they’ve been incredible. In a lot of ways, they’ve been like business coaches for me. They understand the gym industry, they know what they’re doing, and they’re willing to actually help me figure things out beyond just explaining how their software works.”

Looking Ahead

Ask Ryan what gym problems keep him awake at 3 a.m., and the answer isn’t surprising for those who know him: nothing.

“I put my faith in God, and I trust that He will take care of me and guide me where I’m supposed to go,” he says. “I work as hard as I can at the things I can control, and I trust God with the things I can’t.”

If money were no object, he’d keep improving the facility indefinitely with new floors, more equipment, eventually buying and expanding the building. He’s not the type to sit on ideas. When something will make the gym better, he and his wife tend to just do it.

The long-term vision goes far beyond membership numbers. Ryan hopes Full Armor becomes a place where people get stronger physically, find community, get through hard seasons, and encounter something deeper.

“If Full Armor can be part of that person’s journey and help them eventually experience even a fraction of the love from the Father that I experienced when I needed it most,” he says, “then this gym has accomplished something far greater than anything I could measure by memberships or revenue.”

In an industry full of loud marketing and complicated business models, Full Armor Fitness is proving that a clear mission, relentless work ethic, the right systems, and genuine care for people can still move the needle. Tripling the membership numbers in just over three months is evidence that a virtuous approach to operating a gym can be successful.
