There is money being left on the table in your gym right now. If you are not making at least 20 percent of your total revenue from exercise classes at the moment, then you need to rethink what you are offering. Diversifying your revenue is one of the smartest things you can do as a gym owner. Relying solely on memberships to provide you with income is a recipe for possible disaster.

Comparing Gyms

Most successful big-box gyms offer fitness classes that create 5 to 20 percent of their total income. The rest of their earnings come mostly from memberships. However, you have a chance to do much more.

Boutique studios that are usually limited in square footage acquire 70 to 90 percent of their revenue from exercise classes. The classes are the business model. If you have the space in your gym, why can’t you increase your income by doing something similar and add it to the revenue you are currently making just through memberships?

The Ordinary Fitness Classes

You might already be offering fitness classes. Yoga, Pilates, HIIT, spin, and bootcamps can be popular, but they have also been done to death. After a while, people tune them out. It is a case of “been there, done that”.

It is all about generating excitement with a crowd that has seen it all. Instead of repackaging the same classes over and over, consider adding a few of these fitness classes. After thorough research, here are some of the top ones. At the very least, the names of the classes should garner some interest. (Plus, through Gym Insight software, signing people up for these classes will be quick and easy.)

Revenge Body Rave

Everyone goes through relationship breakups. It seems one of the first things people do after getting out of a relationship is to get into better shape. Revenge Body Rave could be accomplished with strobe lights, “glow-up” circuits, and, of course, power poses that signify personal growth. More than likely, people will be taking selfies and publishing on their social media as well. Free marketing!

Office Rebellion

How many of your members are stuck in an office every day that’s slowly draining the life out of them? Incorporate exercises that could relate to their daily lives. Expense Report Carries (farmer’s walk), Lunch Hustle (HIIT cardio), and Boss Takedown (ground and pound on punching dummies) are all possibilities.

Midnight Heist

Who doesn’t enjoy watching a heist movie? Dim the lights and channel your inner safe cracker. Practice escape sprints, duck and dive under the sensors while holding poses, and perform a variety of exercises while watching the “mission timer”. The Mission: Impossible theme alone would make the class exciting.

Trivia Fitness

Everyone loves a good game of trivia. Instead of playing it at home with friends while eating dinner and having drinks, do it the healthy way, where wrong answers will add extra sets to your exercises.

70s Kickboxing Dance Class

I once took this exercise class back in the day, and my sides were hurting so bad…from laughing all the way through. To this day, when I hear Dancing Queen, I want to throw some roundhouse kicks and front thrusts. If anyone ever tries to attack me when Stayin’ Alive is playing in the background, they are going to be in for a world of hurt.

Tabata

Tabata used to be pretty popular, but now it is generally considered just part of a HIIT workout. However, there are differences. The 20-second intense periods of exercise followed by 10 seconds of cool down is a more ferocious style of HIIT than most are used to.

Social Media Fitness Camp

It seems about a quarter of all people working out in gyms nowadays are taking selfies while training. No judgment here, but most of the pictures taken are not high quality or even flattering. By having a fitness class with a photographer snapping pictures and putting them up on the gym’s social media, you will be getting free advertising, as more eyes will be on your product. Afterwards, the participants can share the images straight from your social media page.

Spin Karaoke

A funny thing happens when you are in the middle of a workout. The endorphins start to fire away, and you are left with less inhibition. The self-imposed restraint of never singing in public can be eased right out the door during spin karaoke. As the microphone gets passed around during the spin class, there will be plenty of laughs and perhaps new contestants for American Idol.

Blind Draw Fitness Competition

Randomly pairing up people who have never met one another before in a fitness competition against other teams is sure to get the competitive juices flowing. It seems the most popular blind draw fitness competitions have a male and a female on each team rather than pairing them up by sex. Giving the winners a small trophy to take home will have them coming back for the next class.

Horror-Themed Exercise Classes

Before you know it, fall will be here. Halloween is one of the most popular holidays. Use this time to create horror-themed exercise classes. What could this entail? Perhaps the “victim chase” cardio sprint, as there is always a crazed lunatic trying to run after a victim in these types of movies. Bring in some grappling dummies and let the participants try to ground and pound their way out of being the next casualty. And all of this can be done with some spooky music, eerie lighting, and short cuts of horror movie scenes.
