Smart watches may soon save lives.
Researchers at Google are developing an algorithm that can quickly detect a heart attack while automatically contacting 911. Cardiac arrests are lethal without immediate aid, yet nearly 75% of cases are experienced while the individual is alone.
To combat this unfortunate scenario, computer scientists used machine learning and a cohort of patients with implantable automatic defibrillators to design an algorithm that correctly identifies a cardiac arrest more than 67% of the time. Reaching this high-enough degree of accuracy was a key concern for researchers — a flood of inaccurate readings could easily overwhelm public emergency systems.
Currently, the algorithm only works with the Google Pixel smartwatch. And although more testing is required, they are hopeful an AI for most consumer smartwatches will soon save lives. Read the abstract at Nature.com or listen here for the full podcast interview with Google’s leading technologist on the study.
