We know gym safety is your #1 priority. No doubt you fix broken equipment quickly, background-check employees, and keep a watchful eye out for dangerous people or situations. But have you considered what to do if someone has a sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) at your gym?

It’s possible. Active people and athletes are 3 times more likely than the general population to experience an SCA. In fact, SCA is the number-one killer of people over 40 years old. Installing an AED in your gym is one of the best steps you can take to help save a life.

How can an AED increase gym safety?

When used within minutes of an SCA, survival rates increase dramatically. In fact, SCA victims are over 9x’s more likely to survive in a gym equipped with an AED than in a gym without an AED, as reported by the industry.

These portable devices are “designed to detect and treat life-threatening cardiac arrhythmias. The irregular rhythms disrupt the heart’s ability to pump blood effectively, leading to a loss of consciousness and, ultimately, death,” as reported in RescueStat.

SCAs are not to be confused with heart attacks, although they can lead to them. Usually, they offer no warning signs and are caused by an unknown medical condition or heart abnormality.

gym safety includes well-positioned AEDs.

Am I required to install an AED in my gym?

Maybe. Fewer than 20 states require AEDs in health clubs and fitness centers. Check here to see if your state mandates AED devices and to review requirements.

Is it difficult to use an AED?

No. AED devices are designed to be used by individuals with little or no medical training. Voice prompts guide the individual on what to do and the AED analyzes whether a shock is required. That said, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration highly recommends training in the use of AEDs. This certification is usually taught in connection with CPR.

How many AEDs are required for optimal gym safety?

The number of AEDs required depends on the size and design of your facility. Quick response is critical in the event of an SCA. Survival rates decrease by 7% to 10% for every minute that passes without a shock from an AED.

The AED should be located:

  • Where it can be accessed quickly;
  • Within a 2-minute round-trip walk of any possible emergency location;
  • Within a one minute walk from anywhere in your health club..

Are AEDs expensive?

The cost is similar to that of a better residential treadmill. However, additional expenses throughout an AED’s lifetime include replacing batteries and electrodes as they expire. Many companies package product, training and maintenance of AEDs to make ownership easier for busy gym owners.

Can I get in legal trouble by installing an AED in my gym?

Maybe. Although most states offer protection through Good Samaritan laws, your concern does not end here. As you know, Good Samaritan laws shield helpful bystanders from legal liability for assisting in the case of emergencies,

If you do install an AED, you must train facility employees. As well as create a plan of action for testing, maintenance, and responding to emergencies.

In a sense, consider an AED a living addition to your gym. You would not install a sauna without a plan to keep it sanitary and clean. You would not assign a member to an uncertified, rookie personal trainer.

Do yourself a favor, don’t install an AED if you are going to forget about it. These are amazing lifesaving tools, but they come with responsibilities.

If you own an AED, you should:

  • Properly trained staff;
  • Conduct regular maintenance;
  • Create a written plan of action;
  • Maintain records.
  • Check your AED is FDA approved.
