Protecting Customer Information

Four Tips for Protecting Customer Credit Card Information in Your Fitness Business Data breaches involving credit card numbers and other financial information unfortunately have become common for consumers. According to a Gemalto report, there were 1,540 data breaches worldwide in 2014, which compromised more than one billion data records. These breaches can affect businesses across the board, including those in the fitness industry. Customer credit card information can be obtained through large hacking operations or on a much smaller scale. Sometimes, it can be a small mishap that gives way to a large security invasion. It only takes one person [...]

Your Website Is No Longer An Optional Extra

Picking Up The Pace Of Fitness Business Marketing Having a website is pretty much a fundamental part of marketing for any business these days. In the gym business there are numerous ways that having a digital home helps you communicate and connect. But there are different levels of presence of effort that are completely disconnected from one another. First, it’s now a standard that your website has to be equally readable from computer screens and mobile devices, so anything you publish must be readily accessible to each. Second, like anything else in business, you get a return out of it [...]

Survey Shows Small Gyms Grow By Reviews

Third Party Confirmations I was just reading the results of a really interesting small business survey, and the discussion about it, on the Club Solutions Website. The point was that community and reviews lead as the driving forces for growth across the spectrum of small businesses. Of 6,000 survey respondents, eleven percent were gym members. The survey showed that there is growth in the economy, small businesses get the most return by providing community, and that small businesses, including gyms, get a lot of mileage from reviews posted by members.  The article went on to say that these reviews provide [...]

Charity Events By Orangetheory Prove My Point

On Orangetheory Joining Communities The new HIIT concept gym business Orangetheory has been expanding like crazy across the country of late. I’m glad to see that there is a fitness ethos behind the boom. It looks like they’re selective in whom they hire; only properly trained and certified exercise science graduates need apply. Beyond doing the basics right, Orangetheory is doing something else that I am all in favor of, which is encouraging locations and managers to get involved locally and give to the community as this link shows. Gym Business Niches You Wish You Thought Of

The Fitness Experience Companies like SoulCycle and Spartan Race are focused on the experience you have during training or as goals to meet for preparatory training. Other systems like CrossFit demand much of your body and even with proper supervision by certified staff you can easily strain muscles and joints in practice. SoulCycle is a great example of a fitness business carving out a niche because it defies the trend away from spinning classes, which are apparently in decline. By matching charismatic instructors and style with what might otherwise be a limited format the company has created an enthusiastic base [...]

Credit Card Liability And You

Credit Card Crackdown What is going on with that whole credit card change out, due to be completed by October? It looks like there will be a big panic right at the last minute as retailers (including the fitness industry) will be doing all of the things that they should have done already to try to accommodate the mandatory shift over to the EMV Chip-and-PIN cards for all electronic payment transactions. In recent years credit card companies and merchant services have clamped down on the amount of information that they allow vendors or retailers to retain at the point of [...]

As the proud owner of an independent fitness business you may be enthusiastic about keeping the decorations and equipment right up to date. In gym management for the independent gym owner there are a specific set of concerns because of issues like staff turnover and the need for sales by staff to current members. Differentiating Price and Value In Premium Gym Memberships

Do Premium Gym Memberships Have A Future? Why are there some gym business models that seem to be in huge demand while still charging top dollar for memberships? I think that the simple answer is that there are enough members who are shopping by value and not price. It’s not about competing based on what the gym across the street is charging, it’s about finding the things that you are truly great at and which are in demand and matching the two together. Too many small businesses fail to understand this important distinction, not just in the gym business but [...]
